Door 13 has been opened this morning to reveal:
The Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts! http://www.thenina.ca/
The Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts opened three years after the death of its namesake. A Centre that provides programs and opportunities to enjoy the process and production of art, Nina Haggerty opened in 2003 to serve people with developmental disabilities. Many forms of visual art are available to explore and dance instruction offered by Mile Zero Dance is also available.
The Nina Haggerty Centre was borne of community connections and those have only grown. Artists honing their skills and talents at the Centre have opportunities for their work to be displayed in galleries and spaces around the city, as well as in the gallery on site. Artwork is available for purchase online and at many of the gallery shows.
Central to the vision and values of the Centre is that people with developmental disabilities are provided a supportive environment in which they can become practicing artists.

The Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts is the only organization of its kind in Edmonton. It relies heavily on funding and donations. As a person with a developmental disability who is a parent of two children with developmental disabilities, Nina Haggerty holds a special place in my heart. An organization that supports and believes in strengths and abilities of developmentally disabled adults is rare.
We are able; we are creative; we are artists. The Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts recognizes our abilities; artists are treated as people, not treated in patronizing or pitying ways that deny our personhood or our abilities. When the starting point is "yes you/we can," amazing creations are borne.
