Edmonton has so many organizations in need of financial support. The holiday season is a time when many people spend a lot. Unfortunately, many people also have nothing to spend, struggle with homelessness, domestic violence, mental health issues, budgets that don't stretch to adequately feed the family, resources to assist them through all variety of difficult times.
As a Christmas gift to my partner, I decided to donate, in her name, to one organization every day up to and including Christmas. We are not rich (I'm unemployed, in fact) but we have food on our table, a home, and a network of friends and organizations that support us. We are lucky.
After deciding to do what I'm calling a Giving Advent Calendar, I had to figure out how to document it for her. That's when I decided to make it public and ask others to participate. My goal is $5 each day or an in-kind donation for the organization I name. If you want to participate, please adapt it to your liking. Maybe you can give more or maybe you can give once a week or maybe you can volunteer. You don't have to do exactly as I do; I'm just offering suggestions.

Edmonton has an enormous number of organizations that provide support to our citizens in a variety of ways. I am aiming with my Giving Advent Calendar to ensure that the organizations with big seasonal needs (winter & the holidays) are the doors we open early in the month. I am also aiming to highlight the diversity of organizations we have supporting the myriad needs of our fellow citizens (and ourselves.) I cannot include every organization because there are so, so, so many more than 25. I intend to make this an annual event; my goal is that in time I manage to cover as much of the support net Edmonton has created.
